A coworker of mine began to complain that he could not smoke in a restaurant that he'd used to. He said why do they serve beer to customers and allow them to drink but not let a smoker smoke in the building.

I told him that drinking a beer doesn't affect the person next to you as much as smoking does. I can drink a beer and it would not affect the person sitting next to me. If a smoker lights one up next to me, there is more then one time that smoke trail comes over and irritate me. They say sorry and move the cigarette, but the smoke still drifts toward me. As a non-smoker who has a family of non-smokers. I am with the indoor smoking ban.

My question here is do many smokers like him have a problem with the ban?

Your friend seems a little dumb......passive *drinking* isn't an issue whereas passive smoking is...it can cause cancer. Why should non smokers breath in other people smoke and risk becoming ill?

A little girl who lives in my village developd a shadow on her lung...the doc said it was due to the fact that she lived in house where all the family smoked....poor kid....selfish bastards of parents

Course they are going to complain. It's discrimination against their bad habit. They take it to a whole new level as considered discrimination against them. But if they are going to try a protest to get the ban removed, they might as well try to quit. Which would be easier on their part.
They're not gonna lift the ban. Smoker's reasons to protest against this are stupid.

I won't go to places that has a "Smoker" section. Their smoke doesn't always go in the vents above. That smoke drifts everywhere in a place. I could smell it in the Non-smoker section. Tobacco is the biggest causes of Allergies, Asthma and Cancer. A Non-smoker family can get these issues from visiting a place with a "Smoker" section.

True, was born with asthma thanks to my mother smoking while i was still in her belly :/

What a horribly selfish thing to do

I hope she apologised to you

I'm a smoker but I'm all for the indoor banning policy.

Back when I used to go clubbing and smoking was still allowed indoors, I used to hate the fact that my hair and clothes stunk to high heavens because of all the smoke that got trapped indoors. I wouldn't smoke for days after that.

I don't mind stepping outside to smoke when I'm at a pub or a restaurant, and I usually make sure I don't smoke around kids.

I think what some smokers don't get is, it's a choice you make, to smoke. That doesn't mean other people should wholeheartedly accept you, and if they choose to not be around you, that is also a choice that you need to respect.

I started smoking again a few months ago because I started working in a bar and that's what we do when we knock off.

I remember the years when all you could smell when you walked into a bar was smokes and dank beer.

I would have loved to be living in the 20s in jazz bars or swanky clubs where you drink cheap martinis and smokes ciggerettes. You can't do that anymore, you have no option to even replicate that kind of atmosphere because laws say no....in Australia you can't even vape in a club even though the smoke is harmless.

I can't begin to to explain how much it sucks that probabilities and choices are being taken away, the hotel I work at has crazy restrictions because it's one of the worst in NSW (well was because it got taken off the top 10 list because we just shut down the night club and fired half the staff and they are some still being fired)......let me give you some examples of what it's like at my pub

No shots

No doubles

No hot stuff on the rocks

No alcopop drinks (Bacardi breezers, stollis)

Two people get paid to walk around in Fluoro vests to make sure people aren't being intoxicated (that's all they do)

Anyone who is showing any signs of intoxication must leave the premises

If police come in and find someone drunk and I made them intoxicated I get a $ 5000 fine.

This is called policing when legislations come into play you have no rights to run your venue the way you want.

If I spend money on a bar then I want to have it the way I want it, if people are non smokers and choose to come to my bar why should I have to change it for them when I've geared it towards my certain demographic?

That's where I'm at, take me to turkey or any Arab states where the have shisha tents anytime.

Tell your coworker to enjoy it now because in a couple decades, a CPAP will be in his future. My father smoked for over 50 years (started as teenager) and now must sleep with oxygen because he stops breathing in his sleep. His lungs are that messed up.
I really don't care what he does. As long it isn't around me or in my path. I got no respect for the dude. Not because he's a smoker, but just because he is disrespectful dude himself. He should already know this consequence. We all had the lectures in school and by our parents. He don't respect the rules about smoking near the building entrance. There are three smoking areas and he and a few others don't use them. He been warned about it and told he would been denied of smoke breaks if he keeps it up. But he continues.

Same here. It's not so bad I need an inhaler, but I can't go up more than 1 flight of stairs without needing to catch my breath. Grew up with my parents smoking indoors.

Ah. But considering the drunk driving stats in the States, you might wanna find a better analogy.
Drinking and driving drunk are two separate things.
Here, you can't swing a dead cat without hitting someone that has a DUI.

Edit to say, nor do you hafta be the person drinking and driving to be affected by it. Much like second hand smoke in that regard. Statistically, it's the person *not* drunk that suffers the worse fate.

That's terrible 😢 Are you living somewhere in a more rural area without public transit options?

I feel like the USA is more prone to DUI incidents because it's so geographically spread out that people can't get around without driving.
