Triggering suicides, depression, cyber-bullying. Not measuring up to the image of who and how you want to be perceived. All that shit is hard enough without social media.

How about that good old-fashioned type of bullying instead, when the person had to have the guts to say shit to your face?

Bottom line is social media should be age restricted. Like pornography. You cannot count on adults acting like adults online, but you better believe that young folks don't know how not to take things personally.

At least all school should have a 'social media awareness' week or something with projects nd shit.

I agree to some extent...

because these things actually happen in households before internet came into effect. People kept quiet about it for years.

we just have more people in the world, and also the boom of technology, going into pluto cap, into pluto aquarius.

we're just getting more "light" into the situation so that is good for self awareness.

I like the idea but how would you enforce it?
Same way you keep pornography off Facebook. And if there's an age limit on say Instagram, it's their responsibility to remove users reported as being below the permitted age. If you want to access social media you'd have to basically lie about who you are, which would also potentially soften the blows of any personal attacks.

But on a more realistic note, schools need to take their responsibilities to prepare kids for life online. I realize this is asking too much since many schools still use Windows 98 lol

if i understood well from the cases i know about, it was cyber bulling combined with old fashion. i'm all for banning social media for under the 18 but how to do it? raising awareness at school and stuff like that would have an impact like sexual awareness, i mean kids are still having kids stds etc. idk, creating a special os which would restrict you for accessing certain pages.

Being bullied in school, face to face, is part of growing up and learning to deal with the emotions associated, hopefully surrounded by responsible adults. It's a form of social interaction one learns from, albeit a negative one.

Being bullied online is a whole different reality. You are basically being intruded on in your own home. To many kids, coming home is where the real hell begins. In part bc there are no adults present where it's happening. There are no real restrictions.

you can't compare pornography and bulling. it's easy to determine pornography, but bulling? you should follow for days communication between kids on multiple languages and be sure it's not just joking. it's really tough. making it to be automatic is impossible, it's impossible to create such an algorithm. you give a facebook to be a judge.

about lying, i mean when i was 16 i would have zero issues to lie about my age to access certain sites. lol

Look, I've never seen pornography on Facebook altough I've heard it slips through occassionally. It's easier to keep track of violations on social media like FB and Instagram than it is on DXP and EvilYoshida. The latter are pretty much impossible. All I'm saying is 12 year olds have no business fishing for likes on Instagram. If they can somewhat successfully keep pornography off these sites they can keep minors off them aswell. It's not fool proof but it's not rocket science either.

it's one thing monitoring pictures, and other text communication and age. based on my modest knowledge on programming i say it's impossible. it is rocket science, it's more than that. or they should ask for identity confirmation. and one will always say it's bad for freedom of speech.

oh this seems like non solvable issue to me.

It's not about programming, it's about moderating. When a page has a policy to ban users exposed as underage, that page will cease to be a desirable platform for kids bc that's not the targetet group. Too much hassle for a few likes.

And I don't see how identity confirmation is "bad for freedom of speech".. it's same as being illegal to demonstrate wearimg a face mask. If you gonna open your mouth do it with your face attached or stfu.

when parents will stop buying smartphones for their children, there will be no problems.

People should start buying their own smartphones or computers with their own money.

Children should have simples phones for making calls.
Correct. The problem however, is that there will always be parents going about shit the other way. Basically if you don't follow social trends you'll only end up further isolating your kid. It's a no-win situation

exposed by who? again identity confirmation. couple of years ago, fb and google talked about identity transparency, they wanted to include it but gave up. for instance, there are still countries when you say something against government (without insults just opinion) you get arrested. i'm sure you know that. you can believe me or not, but i'm a bit afraid about things i posted on fb. some of my friends who were more vocal than me are charged with severe accusations. just opinions, nothing more.

Yeah I'm talking about the free world here not Saddam Hussein. One problem at a time

Exposed by who? Exposed by other users, happens all the time on forums. I imagine it would be even easier on pic & life style based platforms like FB and Instagram. Bottomline - AGAIN - if minors are not the targeted audience it will cease to appeal to them as a social platform in the long run simply bc they are not welcome.

Problem with social media today is that it targets the most vulnerable, validation-starved, among us REGARDLESS of age. A little half-assed restrictions could make a world of difference.

This might be a little off topic but is anyone watching Black Mirror on Netflix ATM ? Holy shit that show scares the fuck out of me, it shows where we will possibly be headed in the near future with technology and social media.....I live for this shit but it's the new terrifying frontier, like the twilight zone.

Cyber bullying is the least of our problems, people Kill themselves, they got it good, they're sick of living a soul crushing existence based on social approval, status and people's egos

I'm more concerned about the addiction we have with social media, getting likes and followers is actually linked to our neural cognitive reward systems in our brain, meaning every time we get likes or double taps or tweets our brains release little bits of dopeamine, this is a positive reinforcement drug that our brain secretes and affects us every time we do something that feels good like eating chocolate, have sex, smoke meth, it's designed to help you learn and gravitate towards a certain course, we are all gravitating towards a future where we are reliant on social media etc...,.Facebook has only been out for about 10 years we are still in very early stages, what we are experiencing now is a mass scale experiment and google is pulling the strings.

Google is an incredible yet terrifying beast and it's only in its early stages! Imagine what kids of the future will be dealing with!
