I am always brought back to the story of Tamir Rice. Little black boy playing with a toy gun in the park. Gunned down and cops didn’t even get out the car.

It’s no way to live when as a black person I have a decision to make when calling 911. My call could get me killed or saved. Why are those my odds?

If she would've stabbed that girl in the neck and killed her, while the cop was standing there, he would've been blamed as well.

The law was amended april 4, 2021 so that it doesn't have to be your home or vehicle. And removed the contingency that you need to attempt to move away from the confrontation. So no, she has the right to defend herself.

If she had killed someone else she has the right to a trial, just like any of us who are charged with a crime.

Cops are never blamed for civilian acts of violence. We have mass shootings almost daily in this country and the conversation is solely around gun restrictions/legislation... not lack of cop interference.

She did far less than those who attacked the capitol and killed police officers and walked away with their lives. Nothing justifies the cop taking her life in my mind.

They really need to train cops better. I have no clue if training is different state to state. This issue stays in the public eye and it continues to happen.

They just did it to this kid as well who had a knife.

White people are killed by cops. In far less numbers than black and brown, but yes police indiscriminately kill American citizens daily and get away with it.

Daniel Shaver was on his knees with his hands in the air begging for his life and the trigger happy thumb executed him in cold blood with his own personal ar-15. The judge didn't allow the gun to be entered as evidence.



They fired him of course. But after the trial (he was acquitted of second degree murder and manslaughter) they re-hired him for a month so that he could qualify for medical retirement. He receives a $ 2500 pension each month for the rest of his life due to "PTSD due to his shooting and trial".

Its sickening that cops are rewarded with lifelong pensions for murder. I just want them to be subject to the same laws that govern the rest of us.

Yup. They continue to have mass shooting and give the shooters their 15 minutes of fame and glory all over the media, while arresting them and taking them to jail.

Most of the ones who die end up being self inflicted gunshots.

The same training that cops get in this instance is the kind they need to have in all situations.

Like think about it.

You’re white and a cop kills you because they thought “blank.” No weapon on you, you’re running away. And he puts 5 in your back.

How do you feel knowing, no one is going to think twice about it? A black person would. But no one else will think twice. You won’t even make the news. They’ll put your name in the report. Naw, your mom n dad may get on the news and say “they were harmless blah blah.” But no will bat an eye. No one will ask questions on your behalf. No one will protest for you. The comment section will read “play stupid games, win stupid prizes.” Shucks, you may even agree with the cop from heaven.

More training just means more of the same policing. The whole system needs an overhaul and funds need to be diverted to unarmed responders for mental health calls, traffic stops, etc.

Cops are literally trained to unload their entire clip if they are going to shoot. And they are taught to shoot to kill, not maim. The hold Chavin deployed on Flyod is literally taught to majority of cops. Its standard.

More training is not the answer.

A country wide database to hold cops accountable would be a good start. Cops that get fired from one department are just rehired the next county over.

Tax payers continue to shoulder the brunt cost of police brutality with police and city budgets paying out millions in civil judgements. I know here in LA county alone in 2019 148mill + was paid out on settlements for wrongful use of force/death law suits.

Upping police budgets just allow them to buy tanks and chemical weapons to use against civilians and kill indiscriminately and pay out the victims family with no actual accountability to the police department.

Speaking of directory. There is no USA federal register of cop killings.

You are making some real good points that I wish I had the answers to. I am white and I have zero faith in law enforcement, I guess where I live it's just not very common to see police shooting people of any race without just cause, we just don't see that in the Province I live as much as in the states. I'm sure it happens a lot more in other Provinces across Canada and I really don't know why people accept it.

Last year we had the largest mass shooting in Canadian history and it was in the town I live in. The police did shoot and kill that man, but we are all very glad they did. He killed 22 people across 16 different locations in the Province and was dressed as a Police officer driving a Police cruiser. White people be fkn crazy!

If cops have weapons, they need to be trained properly.

I stand by what I said in that they need more training, so they don't just shoot to kill or taser. They need to have more training, even in cases of helping out mental patients and not doing the "cop by suicide"

If they use excessive force, they need to be in jail and lose all their benefits just like a civilian who loses their job.

Cops should be held just as accountable as regular citizens with weapons.

The police were in her home and couldn't tell she was holding a fake gun. They were called in for a wellness check on a mentally disturbed person, and didn't take her down without killing her.

There is also a instilled belief of some white people that people, white or black, killed by cops are criminals. End of story. No debate. So you wouldn’t protest because you’ve been taught to accept the process as truth.

Strangely, I began to think. Do white people protest differently? Do y’all protest with movies, art etc?

Whereas black people are direct and aggressive with their protest. White people are passive.

To be fair, Spanish officers have started killing black people too. It’s become acceptable that even to them, as a minority.

Racism is a huge problem. It hasnt disappeared or died down. It just goes undercover as it did with the KKK hiding their faces, cops now hide behind their uniform.

It's as much the ideology and indoctrination that goes on in the military, that makes it easier to see the lower rungs of society as the 'other, as it is color. 6% of the population are vets but 20% of the police force is ex-military. My good Cancer friend, Erin, was on the police force here for 5 years. We have one of the most Progressive community based police forces in the country. Still, she still ended up leaving because of the 'old boy network' and aggressive policing by many of her fellow cops who made situations worse by aggravating them rather than de-escalating. The force is multi-racial but most of them are Trumpers.

1 verdict doesn't change anything. The issue is police training and mentality. Did everyone forget about that?

This guy might as well be a escape goat for the larger problem. However yes justice was served here.

That was a really cut and dry case because of the video evidence. If there wasn't so much video evidence, I. Strongly doubt he would been convicted.

Our law enforcement needs to be reformed. Training and mentality changed. Do that and this kind of stuff will happen a lot less. As well as bad apples naturally being weeded out in the police force.

Anthony Thompson Jr was 17 yrs old and killed in the bathroom at his hs April 12th, this past Monday. The mother of his gf called the cops and told them he had a gun. He did not. She needs to be charged with 2nd degree murder, she wielded the cops as a weapon against this child knowing what the outcome would be.

When the police spokesman first came out with a statement they said he shot one of the four officers in the leg. This was before the outcry of the community to see the body cam footage.

Then they amended their statement to say the officer shot his own self in the leg... knowing that the body cam footage would be released and expose their lies. They created a whole fake gun and blamed this child for his own wrongful execution at their hands.

Cops lie to protect their own. There is no accountability. They cover up their own crimes.

Except the so-called patriots? Omg

So my area’s police department is hiring a bunch of “community service” officers to respond to calls without being armed. It’s pretty small area aka mostly rural. And it sounds like a way to get in if you want to be a police officer. Does this mean they are trying recruit in a different way? train differently? Previously they hired a lot of ex military & it was hard to get in if you didn’t have military experience. I only know this because my daughter wants to be a cop - one of the good ones.. to help people. Those are her words. She’s thinking of applying. This area has mostly huge drug problems.

White passing and yes, I very much benefit from this on the daily. Certainly with my past interactions with police which I have spoken about before.

Cops can't be reasoned with if they see your skin color as a weapon. We need to stop that rhetoric.

Tell that to Philando Castile who did everything right, disclosing to the officer right away that he had a gun in the car that he was licensed to carry. He reasoned with the officer, telling him that he was not going to reach for the gun over and over. That officer still fired 7 shots close range and murdered him in front of his gf and four year old daughter.

George Floyd pleaded with the officers and look where that got him. A multitude of onlookers, ranging from children to paramedics pleaded with the officers.

Tell that to Elijah McCain who pleaded with officers that he couldn't breathe as they put him in a carotid hold resulting hemorrhaging in his neck as the autopsy showed. He apologizes to them after vomiting. They injected him with ketamine and he had a heat attack and days later was brain dead.

There are so many others that were caught on body cam, or bystanders footage. Countless others whose stories we never hear because there is not footage that goes viral.

Police brutality hasn't 'gotten worse', its just being exposed in the age of smart phones.

This isn't a good apple bad apple situation when the whole tree is diseased.

It really is the whole system. The cops are in bed with the prosecutor who is in bed with the judge. The same judge who didn't allow this killer cops firearm where he had added the words "your fucked" to be admissible as evidence in the case.

Imagine being charged for murder and the murder weapon isn't seen as evidence by the judge. Wild.

This is very scary. If it was not for the video, it would have been another murder by cop that would just have been covered up:

"Man Dies After Medical Incident During Police Interaction."

That was the headline of a Minneapolis Police press release on May 25, 2020, in the hours after an unnamed man in his 40s died. Absent from the nearly 200-word post is any mention of officers restraining him on the ground, a knee on his neck, or any sense of how long this "interaction" lasted.

In light of his conviction, that original press release is worth revisiting to understand the ways that police statements can hide the truth with a mix of passive language, blatant omissions and mangled sense of timing.

The link to the post now redirects to the Minneapolis Police website, but its text remains accessible through the Internet Archive.

The post begins by saying that Minneapolis Police officers responded to a report of a "forgery in progress," and notes that the suspect "appeared to be under the influence."

"Two officers arrived and located the suspect, a male believed to be in his 40s, in his car. He was ordered to step from his car. After he got out, he physically resisted officers. Officers were able to get the suspect into handcuffs and noted he appeared to be suffering medical distress. Officers called for an ambulance. He was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center by ambulance where he died a short time later.
