Yeah that is very uncomfortable. Why would he keep the litter box in his bedroom though. That's gross. I would place a litter box somewhere not in frequently used space or near a bathroom.

I suggest you make it very clear that you find it gross without being obnoxious and insulting.
For example, act weird when he asks you to spend the night. When he finally begs you to tell him what the problem is you can hesitantly tell him about your cat litter phobia. Make it seem like the issue is with your quirks not his filth, that way he won't get defensive.
He sounds a bit irresponsible. He shouldn't need to be told how to prepare his environment for a lady. Or maybe he's into dirtty stuff, who knows maybe your first date can be to a dumpster for a quickee
