Are you lot familiar with the kid television show Arthur? It's been on air for 22 years. This is a show i've grown up with.

Mr. Ratburn is getting married! To his boo thing Mr.... something idk

But, you read that right! The writers of Arthur have decided to introduce same sex coupling to the young impressionable minds of their viewer.

Honestly guys, PC culture aside...let's get real. How does this make us feel? This is a safe space for discussion, and i want to encourage all opinions.

I personally have absolutely NO issue with same sex anything. LGBTQ rights FTW. Who am I to contribute to the oppression of any minority group not represented, spoken for, or protected?

However, I do find this kind of exposure so early on to be a little unnecessary, because (while i do think it's important to be informed and introduced to the many differences that come with being human) I personally feel like it has an alternative effect on children. It kind of takes sexuality from a lifestlye to a trend, popularizes the "idea" which can encourage all to follow suit for the sake of being "cool"

I think at such a young age, the child's parent should have an active hand in making their children comfortable with who they are, not pop culture/media. I also think it discourages a child being child...why would children need to be educated on such loaded topics so soon? (avg. viewer demographics ages 4-8) I think it all just gets pretty sloppy.

I don't know.. I know it's a sensitive topic but what do you guys think?

The point of life is to procreate (2 men and 2 women can't procreate without SCIENCE), why does a small % of the population, get to tell the rest of the population that they need visibility 50% of the time, or even more.

This is a hijacking of society and human existence

children can learn diversity from their parents, but they don't need to be confused about their role on this earth at a young age, they need to know that their main point of existence is to continue the generations not through a test tube but sex with one another - thats why the concept of a straight marriage is important to learn early on

By your logic any minority group doesn’t deserve representation in our culture because they are not part of the majority.

I know you don’t feel that way when it comes to your people tho...

We're not a minority group, the straight population outranks the gay population, 10 to 1, the gay population should be represented, as every population should, I believe in DIVERSITY

but why the fuk are they represented in kids tv shows, in all netflix shows, in all movies, etc etc etc

I see more Gays than straight Mexicans or Asians on TV

We don't even have straight couple interracial movies/shows.....we barely have that

we're talking about being over represented at this point

Your Netflix watch history is preference based. So what you see is what you chose. It makes for compelling storytelling.

If you really believe in diversity you’d want it represented. You can’t learn diversity from your parents. That’s laughable. They show you one perspective, theirs. To know different you have to be exposed to different.

Personally I don’t see it as having too much of one thing. If anything we are a culture over saturated with media. You pick and choose your poison at this point.

I'm OK with it.

Introducing the subject in such a fashion just helps normalize people's differences in life for children.

What I don't agree with is what they're trying to do here in my country; engaging young children in conversation about body identity and making them feel comfortable with the idea of becoming trans at a very young age. If legislation passes, parents can go as far as losing their children if they try to prevent the child these liberties. But, the country still won't intervene, if you decide to not want to vaccinate your kid...highlighting the real important things, yknow?

I have no problem with trans people, but pushing this agenda on children, who are generally superfluous beings, in regards to character, when not yet shaped by society, will encourage many to think they're in the 'wrong body'.

Also, lol Alabama for refusing to air this Arthur episode.

Guess it'd be ok if Arthur raped DW and she was forced to give birth. Mouth-breathing swamp beasts, that lot.

Shots fireeeeeeeeeeed. I love this response. This is exactly what i meant, children are easily swayed! I know times have changed but I doubt children have marriage in general on their minds so heavily, so why the need so early?

It's like sending a 1st grader to sex ed. Doesn't make too much sense just yet, bc they can barely pass judgment and their subconscious minds (which they will live by for the majority of their adult lives) are still developing, very easy to influence.

Its just bizarre to me lol

Not a problem. That kind of stuff is pretty much unproblematic and there are far more problematic cases with stuff like historical revisionism in kids shows out there.

Did you hear about/see that controversial Ancestry.com commercial?

I agree though! But the same way historical revisionism rewrites the past, embedding falsity into the minds of the youth is the same is the same way (I feel) homosexuality/heterosexuality can be made fluid.

I think sexuality can be both genetic, and learned.

A childs brain isn't developed till about 25 years old

so yeah no I wouldn't let my kid watch. I am not trying to confuse them anymore than they are....

Yes, this was the premise for my question.

When I was younger, sex themes between my peers didnt surface until like 6th Grade. Bi-sexuality became a fad and all of a sudden everyone began wearing rainbow beaded bracelets, skipped the whole "queer" phase which i feel is an authentic common step in discovering how you identify.

I just feel like its early af to introduce these themes via mass media to impressionable minds because kids really aren't even concerned about that shit at that point in life, from my experience.

But idk what kids are up to these days lol

No I wouldn't and I see the point of your question.

My honest response to why that is, -to put it frankly- is that heterosexuality has been normalized in my child's psyche for as long as they were able to process, place and relate to themes regarding sex and identity. I wouldn't want the alternative introduced to them before they are able to place themselves in whichever box they feel fit. Feelings are innate, and i believe that while sexuality is a genetic factor, it can also be conditioned.

So unless they feel different fresh out, and once old enough to express it, I feel like the early exposure is unnecessary.

At any point where my child feels differently from the "norm", I would then do my diligence as a parent to breakdown the idea of homosexuality, gender, etc to them assuming (and hoping) they do feel comfortable enough to approach me on it, as i wouldn't love them any less.

I would just want it to be their choice, without risking something so important being established for them by media, pop culture, whats "hip" the buzz..

I realize this same argument can be made in opposition, but hey 🤷‍♀️ just being honest on the feels

Exposing them to heterosexual cartoon marriage conditions them via media also, which you pointed out. And if they happen to be gay/lesbian/queer/etc.. you normalizing heterosexuality in your child's psyche for as long as they were able to process it, can and will most likely make it difficult to come out to others.

Depends on what you call 'in your face', and political statement vs preference. I think this is all up to interpretation and perception.

Being gay irl is more than just a romance story or the cliche stereotypical image of gay that has been prevalent. We should be able to choose to see every story thats being told.

Plus I don't see this being an issue worthy getting outraged over. Every parent out there has parental control of tv settings and what their kid has access to. If your homophobic than block the show from your kids, simple. No one is forcing you to have your kids watch this.

Alabama banned this episode from airing in the state.

If you are siding with Alabama on anything in this day and age know you are on the wrong side of history.

And just lol@ banning a child tv episode state wide. So much for that free speech spiel. Guess ya'll don't mind if we come for your guns if Amendment rights are up for grabs.

How does it feel to mollify people's feelings about this

it seems to me even in liberal states , individuals can't speak out on things without being labeled or harangued upon

Or you will be accused of being sensitive sjw snowflakes? Ironic that.

No need to feign fake outrage over this. If you don't agree with the content of a tv show then flip the channel. This is a personal choice to watch a show for entertainment purposes. So chose for yourself to not watch. The appropriate response is to LOOK AWAY. Not attempt to silence a minority because you don't like the sound of their voice.

Free speech is a constitutional right.

we're talking about being over represented at this point

Your Netflix watch history is preference based. So what you see is what you chose. It makes for compelling storytelling.

If you really believe in diversity you’d want it represented. You can’t learn diversity from your parents. That’s laughable. They show you one perspective, theirs. To know different you have to be exposed to different.

Personally I don’t see it as having too much of one thing. If anything we are a culture over saturated with media. You pick and choose your poison at this point.

right now my netflix is asian shows/movies

they also tackle homosexuality and I lol so hard! But it's not like in your face , used a million times for political statement, it's just like a preference

I rarely see Black love between a man and a woman in movies or tv shows, but I seen plenty of Black gay men -

Then your watch history and recommended list skews more gay then I guess. Heterosexuality is still more dominantly portrayed in our media. Overwhelmingly so.

Take the kids show in question. All the parents and couples shown on the show are married and heterosexual. Clearly outweighing the one example of a gay couple getting married.

Also this is a pbs show and pbs is funded by viewers. So stop giving them your money if you find it gross. Thats on you. For others who enjoy the content, let them continue to watch. This is not as big an issue you all are making it out to be.

Would you feel differently if they showed an opposite sex marriage on the kids show?

Would you feel differently if they showed an opposite sex marriage on the kids show?

You can say you wouldn't love them any less (and I don't doubt that).. But latent homophobia is seeping through the extravagant excuses as to why you don't want your children exposed it. Just being honest on the feels.

homophobia is starting to sound like claims of Anti-Semiticsm

there can be no criticism , no opinion, no intellectual debates

w/e

Come up with a better excuse then if it being pushed my the media is your only reasoning. Heterosexuality is pushed just as much, if not more.

98% of EARTH is heterosexual

JFC you're only 2% at most of the population, but you want 50% of media attention

ridiculous

It's one coupe in a cartoon show. 98% of the rest of TV barely has any.

Change the channel.

Or you will be accused of being sensitive sjw snowflakes? Ironic that.

No need to feign fake outrage over this. If you don't agree with the content of a tv show then flip the channel. This is a personal choice to watch a show for entertainment purposes. So chose for yourself to not watch. The appropriate response is to LOOK AWAY. Not attempt to silence a minority because you don't like the sound of their voice.

Free speech is a constitutional right.

Wtf are you talking about? All i see is representation for everyone else is unequal yet 2% of the population want to hijack the platform

sorry but that's authoritarianism

First let me see some other groups of people get a bit of shine, can we see mexicans getting married on a cartoon

sheez

we don't even value other cultures, now we going to give EVERY PLATFORM to the gays

gtfoh

First off your percentage is way off. Its closer to 7% of the population. And thats who is out and openly gay. The number is most likely closer to 15/25% if unique users on grinder is anything to go by.

As far as race, Arthur is a show about freakin mice people who come in all shades, so just lol at your Mexican logic. Plenty of Mexican cartoons out there, your just not seeing Spanish speaking shows pop up in your recommended list because thats not something your interested in. Again, coming back to CHOICES YOU MADE in what media you want to consume.

There is no such thing as hijacking a platform. Tv that sells gets continually produced. Don't hate the player, hate the game. Or start your own show to represent the values you want to push. Go ahead. No one here is stopping you.

Blackish and Grownish are some of the most popular shows on tv rn, outranking Modern Family in views which is its direct competitor and a (mostly) all white cast. And Rainbow character just landed a spin off show Mixished. So idk what you are talking about. There are shows out there representing straight black Americans. Just cause your not interested in watching them, doesn't mean they don't exist.

Minorities together outnumber the majority. But they keep you thinking each other is your enemy so you stay divided.

Equal representation is a win for everyone, even if its happening to another community that you don't belong to before it happens to yours, because it means we are that much closer to hearing from everyone. And whats more equal than having your voice be heard.

Image Not Found

Would you feel differently if they showed an opposite sex marriage on the kids show?

You pick and choose your poison at this point.

right now my netflix is asian shows/movies

they also tackle homosexuality and I lol so hard! But it's not like in your face , used a million times for political statement, it's just like a preference

I rarely see Black love between a man and a woman in movies or tv shows, but I seen plenty of Black gay men -

AGENDA

Then your watch history and recommended list skews more gay then I guess. Heterosexuality is still more dominantly portrayed in our media. Overwhelmingly so.

Take the kids show in question. All the parents and couples shown on the show are married and heterosexual. Clearly outweighing the one example of a gay couple getting married.

Also this is a pbs show and pbs is funded by viewers. So stop giving them your money if you find it gross. Thats on you. For others who enjoy the content, let them continue to watch. This is not as big an issue you all are making it out to be.

Most content on Netflix has one gay figure

and its generally a black kid

Thanks for reinforcing the black men are only meant to be gay or weak montage

That they can't be straight and desirable to women

Now they starting it with Asian males

AGENDA

again....this is all very clear

its like those old movies where black men were depicted as Rapists ...same sheet

trying to feminize a generation of black men

'Most content'. What do you consider most. Have you seen more than 50% of the 25 thousand tv shows and movies netflix has on offer? I find that hard to believe.

Watch 15 k of their content and then talk to me about agenda.

No I'm not a scientist. Neither are you.

The scientists out there doing research have shown that homosexuality is universally found across the natural world in mammals, birds, sea life, insects, etc. They are all bumping and grinding on each other, gender be damned.

Pushing 1-2% is laughable just like your estimate of gay population percentage. Only 1-2% of the animal kingdom DOES NOT engage in same sex behavior courtship. Heres some articles from scientist for you to read, since your so interested in the facts.

Most shows have one or two gay people, as do most lives. People only care about this if they don't like gay people.

Here's how a conversation with a toddler seeing this goes (if they're confused at all).

"Why is that boy marrying a boy?"

"Most boys like to marry girls. And most girls like to marry boys. But some boys like to marry other boys and some girls like to marry other girls."

That's it.

It will only be a problem for people who can't say that because they don't accept the existence of gay people and their right to get married. Toddlers won't have a problem with it. They won't _turn_ gay, but if they happen to be gay, they can feel better about who they are if it's more represented and respected.

And that, my friends, is the "gay agenda". Encouraging self-acceptance of how people are born. I'm all for it.

Boom. This right here.

I watched the episode earlier and the storyline works whether he's gay or straight.

So I dunno if you want to see that as token homosexuality in a storyline or just a minor detail that's upsetting people.

However the episode was age-appropriate. The topic wasn't sexuality, it was about their teacher having a personal life and how they worry it'd affect them at school if he married the wrong person.

I bet 90% of the people complaining haven't even seen the show in a decade +

However, I do find this kind of exposure so early on to be a little unnecessary, because (while i do think it's important to be informed and introduced to the many differences that come with being human) I personally feel like it has an alternative effect on children. It kind of takes sexuality from a lifestlye to a trend, popularizes the "idea" which can encourage all to follow suit for the sake of being "cool"

I don't know.. I know it's a sensitive topic but what do you guys think?

Would you feel differently if they showed an opposite sex marriage on the kids show?

You can say you wouldn't love them any less (and I don't doubt that).. But latent homophobia is seeping through the extravagant excuses as to why you don't want your children exposed it. Just being honest on the feels.

Lol @ latent homophobia!!💀 a lil strong there pal

Also, the discussion of sexual fluidity or identity and it's premise for debate is hardly a new or entirely absurd idea 💀 Excuses for what exactly?

Tbh having fear, disdain, or clinging onto ignorance regarding the matter aren't a fathomable possibility to me so your judgment is surprising but I did expect some to become defensive. The only concern here is the chance of having any child's sense of sexuality be defined by a sensationalized idea of "what's cool" which is what early introduction via these channels (I feel) does.

We both know It's a double edged sword.

If it were flipped, same opinion.

I don't think the youth shouldn't be exposed at all, just when they're old enough to decipher their emotions/urges and make a choice, or at least begin to consider one. Let's keep children children. I realize this is unique to each person but I think 4-8 is way too young to have that discussion if they don't feel already that way

Also I would imagine it's real difficult for a single person to successfully normalize any single thing. This is what general consensus establishes. And general consensus has already established "the norm" for all of us until we know better enough to take our own direction. And I get your point in that but it's a bit of a reach too because that would mean most all people have some kind of identity crisis regarding their sexuality and I don't really see that.

I think your argument is to expose them to both as early as possible for the same reason I believe it should be held off?

I never thought of it that way

"Why does daddy have his hands down another daddy's pants?" A question no parent wants to be asked.

Ummm... yeah. Probably shouldn't let your children watch sexually explicit shows.

Has absolutely nothing to do with the cartoon show we're discussing.

I meant in real life.

Again.. absolutely nothing to do with this discussion.

If the child asks that question.. the parent did something wrong. Not the TV programming.
