What's the strangest, weirdest, grossest, downright off the wall food you've ever eaten? How did it taste? Would you eat it again?

For me it is probably a toss up between squid ink and jellyfish. The squid ink was pretty light in flavor and had an undertone of ink taste (that smell/taste you get if you've ever smelled a ball point pen or ink well). The jellyfish however was odd. Slippery and a little slimy at first, then when you bite down there is an uncomfortable and inaudible crunch like biting into soft cartilage. Not a pleasurable texture. While I would give ink a possible shot, I think I'm done with jellyfish....maybe I'll try it one more time for good measure...

A balut. Boiled fertilised duck egg..I can feel the baby feathers on my tongue...never again.

I love fish eyes..the gelatinous gooey and creamy white of the eyes..yum (cooked of course) ?

I'm not expecting to see any Asians on this thread.

Funny thing is, the jellyfish was in Chinatown at a place where everyone only spoke Chinese. One of my friends took us and had to order everything for everyone. So naturally she decided to order some weird stuff just to see our reactions.

Human flesh.

Would I eat it again? Only if I was absolutely starving...

You know I didn't expect that answer that early. Thought someone was going to slip it in there after a few posts later. I'd ask why, but not entirely sure I want to know the answer.

OH the fertilized eggs....that's metal...I simply can't. The texture, smell, everything, that's hardcore.

My grandfather used to eat fish eyes. He also ate the eggs or "caviar" straight out of the fish. I didn't eat the eye because I was 9 or 10 and that was too much for me, but the raw fish eggs were interesting.

Hi. That's awesome! We get it only at the Asian supermarkets here. They come in little snack packs. And jerky little shrimps and eel and stuff like this too! Even jerky fish whole!

I shop there because they have good food and it's cheaper.

Same! And I've done jerky anchovies too. The split in half funny looking ones!? But they look at me funny cuz they rearrange the shops but then they're like ok you know. Loool. :/.! And for dinner I've done the whole squid in a tube thing. Lol! Fried squid.

Yea those are pretty much staples in my diet and snacks. If they aren't in the front, they are usually in some obscure aisle that only Asians can find. lolol

You should try the stuff squid some places make. That shit is so good.

True to 1st but people just know when you looking for something obscure by mean muggin in an Asian or foreign place. Very helpful when you really lost. Lol! So true! Lol...

I don't buy the pre-made from the shops... Do you mean from a restaurant or country? That's sounds delish.

I'm havin pizza yo. :/. Lmfao.

Some Asian (Chinese/Vietnamese) restaurants have it. But we also have deli like places that you can buy premade homecooking from. They usually have it, but again, you gotta know an Asian that can take you to the "Asian hood" to find these places lol

I've had jellyfish as well. It was sliced thin and tossed with shredded cabbage. It isn't the flavor because there isn't much, but the texture that gets you.

We have the Viet subs around here! But still those sound so good. I want to make. The squid stuff. Thanks.

And yeah that's true. But I hear the best Asian food is when they invite you to clothing store/back of restuarant: secret lair where literally you will eat the best food of your life... If you're into that and all. 🙂.

How did that happen? 😱

There are only a few ways that aren't horrifying....well only one or two really....and they're still pretty intense....

I think I know what you're hinting at ?

Yeeeeah, one of my high school teachers has eaten human flesh. He even kept some of it in a jar with formaldehyde to show the class. CRAZY guy, but incredibly brilliant. Was way too good at his job and quit later.

Did it include shark soup and gambling?

And that's awesome. Nice to see she brought you around your? (her?) culture! It's so easy to miss and lose! That must have shaped ya in some ways! Thanks for feeding me cultured soul instead of mouth, btw, y'all. Food is late but bad weather. 😢

whoa dude, that's evil to the bone. A menace to society haha.

he'd get prosecuted for that in holland lol

Hahaha not really, it was the placenta from his daughter's afterbirth. So no one came to harm as a result, it was just human refuse. Still technically human flesh. Still pretty gross and intense, but it's also a delicacy in certain areas around world. Safe to say, all of his students were pretty grossed out, but we all respected the man. I don't think he ever had one bad student.

Wow. Well, most normal food I have not eaten... Pizza.

Would ya'll pay for food that takes long (aka pizza more than hour and 15 min.?) it's not that cold here. Just too cold for food or cooking this second. And too lazy because I ate dinner before dinner too.

Great. Burgers now I guess. Wow man.

Why is pizza taking so long for you? 1hr and 15 minutes? I'm guessing that's with delivery...just pick it up or make it yourself (only takes 20-25 minutes if depending on where you're ordering it from). Making a flatbread generally takes around 25-45 minutes depending.

Had birria a couple times. That's as crazy as I go.

#thuglife

That actually sounds really good. Oh come on, how is lengua not higher on the list than birria? Even menudo for that matter, though tripe is in a lot of soups/stews from different cultures.

Lmao. I haven't had Lengua that's why. I just recently tried el pastor tacos and when I eat posole not menudo. Even in food choices I can be picky ?

All I heard was that we're getting you some lengua. Mmmmmm nummy

Guinea pig.

Was in Cusco, Peru and we got empanadas off the side of the road. They were so delicious we ordered another and my friend and fluent Spanish speaker asked the dude what kinda meat was in them. He lifts up the table skirt and there's a cage of live Guinea pigs running around. LIVE!!!

What made it worse was I had a Guinea pig as a child. His name was checkers cause of the checkers pattern in his belly. But as horrified as I was I still finished that second empanada. It was too good not too. Sorry checkers ?

Filipino Dinoguan. It's really good. Even though I don't eat meat, i still take some of the sauce to pour over jasmin rice. It's blood sauce, meat and tripe.

Balut. Nasty ass fermented salt baby chicken feather eggs. Yuk.

Some moon cakes

Bittermelon is just weird to me

Fish row -shudders-

Slice the bitter melon thinly, fry it up with scrambled eggs, and Chinese sausage. Eat on top of some rice and its delicious.

The weirdest think I ever ate was quail. Not too weird by itself... but the plating was 3D. It was deep fried in one piece as it sat solo on my plate as if still alive in sauce designs made to replicate a tree branch and leaves.

But, I have eaten fairly regularly alot of things in the sea, being brought up near the ocean, to include octopus.

I grew up eating deep fried quail. I love it, but the reward return was not worth it. It’s like eating tiny crab arms. All the struggle for an empty stomach lol

So delish... It was the entree in a four course meal though.

Pork belly. No like. 😝

Whattttttt?!?!! It’s amazing though?!?

😊 I know a lot of people like it. Too spongy and rich for my liking.

I cook it crispy with sesame oil and garlic and salt and pepper and kimchi. Super yum!

I get that texture is a huge thing. It depends on the cut too. I really don’t like spongy and fatty meats.

I had it with Kimchi. I disliked the Kimchi too, haha. I think pork belly would be good for flavoring in a crock pot or stew maybe, I just can't eat it on its own.
