So next month I am getting some serious upgrades for my desktop and/or a high end laptop.

My question is, should I do that or get a Mac?

Some of my very basics as a user are :

Word processing

Gaming

Video/audio production

I've been told that only big wig companies now use Mac (for FCP) for post production purposes. Mac has been getting a lot of flak apparently for its lower end systems being sub par at best.

Any suggestions or opinions?

DON'T GET A MAC!!!!!
Lol why?

I've always wanted a Mac for video/audio production...But I've asked around in the industry and its turned out to be a disappointment.
I don't know much about them in regard to gaming. I could never get passed the layout / navigating of a Mac.. I just don't like Apple anything, they are not very user friendly in my experience compared to Windows.. But I am also just stubborn and set in my ways.. LOL

I think maybe Mac fails in the gaming dept. I dunno.

I'm not a fan of Mac either and I agree it's not very user friendly.

But I've seen/heard stuff done on a Mac (albeit this was 5 years ago) and oh my...

Mac. 😉
Why though?
Why not.

It's really your specific needs + personal preference in terms of interface and ecosystem.

Either one will do. But spend some time playing around with both Win and Mac machines and see which feels more like home. The "needs" part should be easy enough to figure out. Just determine the software/tools you need. Both platforms should have more or less what you're looking for unless it's a platform-specfic tool.

I'm a multi platform user - Windows, Mac and Linux.

I was thinking of maybe getting a Mac for mostly video/audio.

I have Windows and Linux for the rest.

You can game just fine on Macs, but they're not really for that. Some big-studio titles don't make it to Mac or only make it later. If gaming's a thing for you then you'll get much better value out of a Windows box.

Yes I've heard about the delays in getting out the Mac version of games.

PC Master Race gamers knows that you game on a PC with Windows.

Mac is definitely more for video/music production or as I did with my macbook, just web browse and check emails LOL

https://pcpartpicker.com/ is a good site to see what you can afford to build your little beast

Also, check out https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/ for deals and sales on PC parts, Monitors, etc.

I heard Mac is good for audio/video production. Personally, I don't know, but for gaming, it lacks support and requires stronger hardware for some reason. Maybe because of support and compatibility.

I'd rather get a win and custom it to work your way. Might cost the same as the Mac since Macs seem to cost an assload of money
Yeah I'm sticking to Windows for gaming, so now it's Mac mostly for video/audio production.

dont do mac, its going down hill. once was great not anymore. pc gaming computers can handle any graphic stuff a mac anymore. I love my msi computer. handles everything from game and my graphic design. i learn that some sciences use them for their simulations when they test a math thingy idea. both my laptop and desktop are msi motherboard computers. beef as alienware but haft the cost. LOVE IT. a lot of my gaming friends who do youtube videos use msi. you can ask any of them on the GG discord group i am in. the big thing is putting your money into a beefy graphics card. they run like hard drive now or like a small computer in the computer.

the next computer i sooo want to get is a quantum computer. YES crazy, love it

What are you mixing on linux?

or what software / hardware are you using...
https://www.mixxx.org/

I had a thread up once about Ubuntu
I know that's why I was asking.

Did you ever get you turn table connected to it and working as you said you had issues with it?

Yup I did! 🙂

I tried mixx on my windows PC but interestingly enough the windows version doesn't work as well as the Ubuntu one.

I've been a developer and designer for 20 years, so this is experience talking.

Forget what corporations are telling you, they need to sell things to make money. You'll be more than happy with an old "outdated" laptop, and install your choice of free Linux operating system:

https://www.howtogeek.com/191207/10-of-the-most-popular-linux-distributions-compared/

You don't need a faster processor and more RAM, you need a better operating system. I'm happily using a Toshiba laptop that's over 12 years old with Ubuntu, and it runs a lot faster and more reliably than any of the new laptops that have 4, even 8 times the speed.

But I do recommend replacing the old HDD with an SSD, the read/write rate does make a big difference.

And forget Microsoft Office, you'll be just fine with the free version of OpenOffice. It's faster, easier to use, and free.
