Tip. As long as you have arranged payment plan and all is cool, keep it separate or don't borrow out money.

They are deadbeat tenants. There are no arrangements. They promise to pay and then "lose their phone" or have a tragedy. Every month it's an elaborate story. Someone robbed them and only stole the rent, the cat needs surgery, the car got totaled, their brother needs a kidney.....they can never just say they don't have it.

Man.. Americans are fierce about tipping eh? :/

I never understood it.. they bring you food.. they don't even make it.. yet get more of a cut than the actual cooks. There are tons of professions out there that deserve tips yet do not get them.. so why is it a requirement for a waiter or waitress?

I hear people saying.. oh they live off those tips.. WTF?

They make a wage just like everyone else.. And everyone else is expected to live off that wage with no tip..

I don't get it..
it's just one of those things that was handed down to us - we don't get it anymore either - but it still happens and panties get bunched about it !

Thanks for showing you ignorance,in most cases that job is payed less and people who do it try to make it up with tips

I had a friend who worked as barman, suffice to say a supermarket worker earns much more then he did and he had a rough schedule

How does that make me ignorant? Pisses me off that is how someone is viewed for having my opinion. Dude.. there are tons of min wage / low paying jobs.. not just waitress, yet they are the only one that seems to require a tip? Ya'll act like waiters are the lowest paying job on the planet.

The grocery store clerk makes min wage.. do they get a tip when they take groceries to the little old ladies car?

The guy at Walmart who just took the huge ass tv out to your car makes min wage too.. did he get a tip?

I could go on.. but the point is that there are TONS of people with low paying jobs.. not just waiters and waitresses. I've worked lots of low paying jobs with no tip and worked a heck of a lot harder than walking a plate of food to a fkn table.

it is a hard job sometimes and then you have some people who are really bad at it - I tip more for good service - because I've been there - how about that! I tip less for bad service because it is what it is ...

Agreed.

I go to a local animal feed and supply retailer for items for my dog.. the guys there only make min wage and are constantly lugging around heavy items for customers. All day long carrying out cattle and horse feed, even in the dead of winter, helping people load their huge orders in their vehicles.. they don't get a tip and making just as little if not less than a waiter..

well back in the day, waitresses/waiters got paid less than half of the set minimum wage - like I recall getting paid about $ 2.00 per hour versus the minimum wage rate which was like $ 7 something at that time - because I made up the difference in tips which you were supposed to report but somehow I never counted correctly so I can say most or some but probably never all of my tips were taxed ...

I don't tip at all for bad service. That's what I never understood.. So many people still feel required to tip even if the service is awful. Likes it's a given.. something you HAVE to do regardless. Guess I am just a meanie 😆

I guess we have varying degrees of awful - but a totally awful experience equals no tip at all - on another note, I'm a Taurus so when I get food in my belly I feel less mean ... lol

I didn't realize that! But now they make just as much as the rest on min wage. It would be totally understandable if they were only making half of min wage, cause yeah, that is ridiculous.

Well that sucks 😢

not really if you worked in a high end restaurant - you can make way above minimum wage on average across one week ... but I am not sure how they do things these days - I've heard bits and pieces about how you have to share your tip with the person who clears the tables, and also the cook who cooks the food for your table - it's getting complicated. And some restaurants put all the tips in a pot and all the staff get equal shares of what is earned. That way if one is good and gets a good tip, it's offset by the one who is not good and they get equal shares - that is supposed to encourage teamwork and encouragement and support - mostly it causes fights out in the parking lot after work

Nooo.... they make a FRACTION of the wage.

Probably less than half what the kitchen makes.

Tips are supposed to bring it up to at least

minimum wage.

From what I have been told, the minimum wage they are paid is quite often less than the tips they potentially could make. So they literally have to work themselves hard just for a decent pay packet.

Over here where I am, we don't have a minimum wage system, but customers are not allowed to tip. Instead there's a 10% service charge in the bill, but it's not compulsory and some places don't have it. There is still no tipping though, because what servers are paid is decent enough for day to day living.

I agree totally - the fast food sandwich shop now asks for a tip on the screen when you order - I was like WTF ? because we are not used to that here in the US - as I mentioned elsewhere, there are different wages for wait staff who get tips - at least that is how it was 30 years ago - most likely it's changed but I don't think that much. You work for tips to make up the difference in low paid wages. We can't tip everyone so I think it should just stop altogether - one way or another - too many ifs, ands, or butts.

Maybe it's different in America.. but I don't know anyone at all that makes only 2 $ an hour. Min wage is min wage.. everyone has the same minimum rate that they can make here :/
You should come to romania then, that 2 dollars per hour would be like heaven on earth, my friend made like 1/ hour

Point is , it depends on who owns that restaurant or whatever and how they treat their employees

If they give the minimum wage then i don't see the problem but that's not the case

Plus all the tips he got had to go the jar from which he never got anything , minimum wage at at that time was like 200-230 ish , so like 10 million in Ro money which is low, anyhow he got like 8 which is below minimum

and then that happens and that is unfortunate - there are enough who are desperate enough to have to work for him and put up with that ... so sorry ...

They're supposed to make the rest of their wage off of their tips. Everyone else makes a minimum of $ 7.25 an hour, waiters get paid about $ 2.00 an hour. The rest is in tips. So say a waiter works 8 hours and makes $ 100 in tips, if you divide that by the number of hours plus their base pay of $ 2/hr, it's as if they made $ 14.50 an hour. The tips make up for it
Maybe it's different in America.. but I don't know anyone at all that makes only 2 $ an hour.

Plus all the tips he got had to go the jar from which he never got anything , minimum wage at at that time was like 200-230 ish , so like 10 million in Ro money which is low, anyhow he got like 8 which is below minimum
what a comparison - waitress/waiters used to be able to make really good money if they got in a good place that was busy and had great food and atmosphere ... these days who knows cause I'm out of that scene

I just can't understand people like that, it must be hard owning even a small company and i get that but it's on thing to face hardships and explain to that worker that this is the situation and i can't pay you fully or something , or with a different approach but not paying at all..

Most servers or waitresses make a third of minimum wage thou. Which federal minimum is still below $ 8 and hr I think ...so yes they get paid less hourly than a McDonald's worker.

-_- For the last time people.. I didn't know that when posting this. I am not American..

But I cannot fathom that they pay waitresses less than a MacDonal's worker! How is that still happening? :/

First reaction- fuck no, don't tip her.

But then again, their lack of money is why they're behind, so not tipping her takes away from money for the day, which could hypothetically be going toward that rent.

But at the same time, bitch owes you.

Tbh, there are a lot of people like her in the industry. It's quick, fast cash and there are people out there who just never grow up and spend it all at the bar after work. Always some sob story when the reality is they can't manage their finances for shit. I have a coworker who's a deadbeat tennant too and he's always crying to us about how terrible his life is. The reality is he's a man child that has shit financial responsibility and expects everyone to cater to him.

...don't tip her. Eff that noise.

Okay, you silly bitches who think kitchen staff gets tipped or whining about how they do all the work-

Kitchen staff gets paid more hourly than we do. They are not considered tipped employees and make a higher wage because of this. They also get "free" or uber discounted meals vs us.

We're tipping out bussers, bartenders, and food runners. There ARE places out there that make servers pay the kitchen, but it's really not that common and usually in small, hole in the wall establishments who are cheap fucks and want to consider everyone "tipped" employees so they don't have to pay anyone shit.

And just to put some shit in perspective to the ignorant masses- I tip out about 6k a year to my bussers, bartenders, and runners.

This last weekend, I had so many shitty, ghetto people stiffing me, I had to SUBTRACT those tables from my total sales because I wouldn't have gone home with shit since tipping out is based on sales. It's fucked we're forced to tip out a percentage of sales despite the fact we don't always make money off those sales.

"lol 1500 in sales? You only made tips off of 1000 in those sales? Tip out on 1500 in sales."

Pfft.

When I first got on my own, I once lost a $ 980 money order I got for rent because I couldn't find my check book. I had left it on the counter at the post office when I was filling it out.

I had to show the landlord a police report for him to believe me lol. I had to write him a check the next day.

Sometimes people do lose their rent money lol

I believed them the first few times but after awhile it got to be ridiculous.

i felt sorry for them but that was my stupidity. I should've evicted them months ago. They always pay something but never the full amount. They have been consistently behind for quite awhile now.

You should of picked a different restaurant.

You're playing a game.

You've also took up one of her tables to play this game, so she could of earned income out of a more sincere pocket and that could of gone to you.

I didn't pick the restaurant

And I did leave her a tip 20% actually which I did mention above.

Then what's the point of this thread?

It was started hours ago when I first sat down and kind of shocked that she was my waitress. There was no game playing with her involved. I'm not the type that would go out of my way to show up at her place of employment to get money. My grandfather chose the restaurant. I had no idea that she even worked there. Last I knew, she was working at a grocery store.

In that time, I decided not to mention the rent and focused on the reason that I was out to lunch to begin with.

I finished eating, paid and left a long time ago. The thread has evolved into a separate discussion.

Well if you wanna be classy, you will keep it separate.

That said, such a thing would only be practical if it would cover the whole debt. Kinda pointless any other way, all it does is create one more psychological barrier separating you from your money.

Right. I was going to say, so your other option was to subtract the $ 13 tip from the total of $ 1500? lol it's a small amount that will make you appear highly petty, which definitely wouldn't work in your favor.

Besides, she did you a service, which you would have paid out to any other server anyway.

I tipped her and never mentioned the debt. $ 13 on a $ 66 bill so I wasn't cheap either. Hopefully she uses some of that to pay her rent.

I was taking my grandpa out for his 90th birthday. He is sad as it is because he just found out my grandmother won't be coming home after rehab and will have to go to long term nursing care. I didn't want to add any more drama.

wow your grandpa was still able to get out and about? that's really great!

our grandma at that age was in the old folks home due to dementia and they have a restaurant downstairs for the residents, and for visitors it's 6 euros per meal which is a HUGE meal with the works and desserts.

Did they have proof of 3x rent in income during the application process?

Yeah, that's what I did...ugh. And now I'm feeling guilty reading all of it. But as a waitress it makes me really upset when people think we don't deserve tips or we don't do much but walk plates to tables.

I reacted before I read it all :/

Ahh, yeah, after reading a few pages it's definitely like Groundhogs Day for blackphase and I feel sooo bad being yet another one to dispute what she said.

It is a shit-show though. I agree with you on that. I've had enough of it after 8 years and am ready to get back into the corporate world if I can.

Is the number really that high with how many close within 5 years? Where I work now, the owner is so greedy, everyone knows it, but you're not allowed to say a thing about it.

For instance there was a party for state troopers, about 100 cops and wives/girlfriends there. On top of the tip, one of the officers handed him $ 300 for us. The owner pocketed $ 200 and he told us we got an extra $ 100. Like wow. Must be nice to steal from your employees, including your own nephew. Such gross behavior.

Probably why he's still in business after 15 years sadly.

Yeah I think thats what happens eventually with restaurant owners. They have to cut costs to stay open and sometimes that even includes messing with the staffs pay and with some loopholes in the restaurant business they can do so.

But yes only 20% of new restaurants stay open past 5 years. Some really low odds. Idk why people would even invest money in trying to do it.

Tipping is way different in Europe....trust me....if I counted how many time @Damnata scolded @Justagirl and I for tipping too much when in Bucharest...I could pay the OP's dead beat tenant's rent....lol
lol!

My Cancer friend ripped me a new one when I wanted to tip our adorable tour guide 20 Euros for a really pleasant city tour of graffiti art in Berlin.

If you're shrewd enough to do it in the food and beverage biz... Welcome to America, you've made it ??

All these Restuarant owners and Managers on there side do it, make employees pay out other employees so they don't have to. It's just the stealing part I can't get past where I'm working now. And it's such a nice place to eat, everyone loves it there. It's bananas because I know how they really are.

But at least the owner enjoyed his cruise to the Bahamas with his family or wherever he went two weeks ago lol.

The waitress is more than just someone bringing your food. They can make or break the whole experience. They also can help upsell products thus making the company more money.

They are the faces of the restaurants. When people have great service then tend to be repeat customers who give great reviews online again making more money for the company.

I don't get it too! This is some fuckery american culture stuff!

My Pisces sister tips and is too generous.

Its crazy. I don't always tip, sometimes I will tip on special occasions. When I give its 2 $ maybe a little bit more sometimes.... Mayyybe!

" they live off those tips "

Terrible argument. Some places, some people can double and even triple their minimum wage with the tips only..

They make a fortune with their tips!

I know it because I used to deliver pizza when I was 17! lol. The tips were unbelievable sometimes....

Waitress makes more and keep more in their pockets, they don't have a car to maintain, No gas and all that....
I hope you get the special.
?
Service industry justice. 😄

If you tip well, they remember. If you don't, you're opening yourself up to their personal preference of wrath. Especially if you're rude/smug about it.

But thats the chef / cook tho!

A waitress takes your plate and brings it to you.... That's it. They don't make the food!

They're frontline staff. If customers/patrons aren't happy with the service/quality of food, they will be the first to hear of it/get an earful.

The customer can make their lives a living hell if the cook doesn't do a good job or the waiter's service skills are not up to mark.

They will also be the first to go if business is bad.

Similar to marketing executives and salesmen - they are supposed to 'sell' a restaurant's image by making a customer's total experience (atmosphere + quality of food) worth every cent he/she is paying. So it's not just about the food.

I wouldn't go back to a restaurant if the service is bad, even though the food is good. Rude serving staff + long waits for your food can really ruin a good meal for me.
