Horror films and grief

So an acquaintance brought this up today after watching the film Hereditary, and I thought I'd bring it here to see if anyone knows of any other horror films that are dedicated to grief and trauma.

I've been a fan of horror films for a very long, but until recently I never really saw them as a method of dealing with grief and loss. Thoughts?

Also, an interesting article that touches on how horror films translate grief and loss for the viewing masses.

Heriditary should have received an Oscar nod. Was excellent.

The Orphanage (Spanish)

Devils Backbone

The Babadook

Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance

The Changeling

Pans Labyrinth

Don’t Look Now

Mother (Korean)

Stand by Me (light horror/more drama)

AntiChrist (couldn’t watch)

Oldboy

Eraserhead

Pan's Labyrinth is one of my favourites from Guillermo del Toro.

I think I need to watch AntiChrist again.

I read an explanation like that once somewhere. I'll have to read this article today when I can, oddly horror films don't do it for me even if grief and loss affect everyone.

I've always been attracted to the Pathos of soap operas, I don't know if any paralells can be made at all.

I think horror films help me in terms of traumas, loss-related or not. But as for the part about grief and loss, the effects aren't very obvious and I usually don't come away from a horror film thinking that I've learned something about grief.

Music is usually my go-to when it comes to loss.

do you think someone's fave horror movie's a clue to their deepest grief/trauma?

of all the tropes in horror, the most unnatural to me is the resurrection of any deceased being/re-animation of a corpse.

when i thought about it, must be coz change always gave me anxiety. some kind of deep fear in me.

there's comfort in knowing that some things in life are permanent, even if it is death.

Hereditary

The Witch

Insidious 1&2

The Conjuring 1&2

The Exorcism of Emily Rose

The Omen

Anabelle

Sinister

Get Out

The Exorcist

Rosemary's Baby

The Blair Witch Project

The Shining

Which one of those aren't demon possessed movies?

I think I'm going to give hereditary and American psycho a try today.

Are you trying to avoid demon possession movies? 'Cause I don't wanna spoil anything, but...

Lol I googled the movie hereditary after posting this 😅 my moon can be impatient sometimes lol.

And yes.. I avoid subjecting myself to movies like that. But once or twice a year won't hurt. So I'm still going to give it a try.

Should I burn some sage while watching tho?

I always thought that was Scorpio's domain. The biggest horror buffs I've known were a Scorpio and a Virgo.

lol!

It's a good movie. I'm glad I saw it, but you're probably going to need a lot of uplifting, booty-shaking music to cleanse yourself afterward.

Hahaha yess! I'm going to need a distraction. I'll watch it in a few since the sun is up 😫

Oh my God, I love them. "This is a local shop for _local_ people!"

It seems to me that Virgo men, in particular, can be quite dark and interested in macabre things. Look at Nick Cave. I wonder if you'd find different sign dominance grouping around different types of horror. I can see Mars-influenced people liking slashers, for example, but that's a guess, not something I've really seen.

Shining, Rosenary's Baby, Get Out, Exorcist, Blair Witch, The Vvitch...... none of them strike me as being thematically about grief.

Unless sobbing characters and/or having a history = grief. In which case essentially all horror movies are about grief.

I actually felt a sense of despair for The Witch, *SPOILER ALERT* When the dad broke down by the realization of his pride costing his family's sanity, stability and their place in civilization kind of hurt my soul

Yeah but I was thinking more like a movie that has grief as a theme (Hereditary, Don't Look Now) as oppose to just a movie that has grief in it

I think when it comes to being a film buff and being a filmmaker, the requirements are different.

Alfred Hitchcock was a Leo sun/Scorpio moon, but Sun dominant - however he had Mercury Virgo and a few others in Virgo. He set the bar very high for future psychological horror films.

David Lynch is Cap sun/Virgo moon but moon dominant. Same dark and twisted approach to horror and psychology in film.

Neil Marshall is Sun Gemini/Aquarius moon.

I can go on and on but I've noticed a pattern with mercurial placements, so definitely Virgo or at least some Mercury aspects (3rd house or either Gemini or Virgo).

Interesting!

I watched a documentary on David Lynch last night, unusual man and quite quirky for a Cap.

Looks like this thread went off topic. I hate when that happens to my threads... makes me think really snobby condescending thoughts.

I usually ignore derailers.

Sometimes people don't understand the basis of a thought process behind a thread ( in this case it's representation of grief in horror films) and just post whatever. I stop bothering to give directions.
