Is it safe for a woman to travel alone to Romania?

Anyone have first hand knowledge?

I do. I went hosteling I had my brother and two friends though.

I would say no.

If you have to make connections that mean you will be in train stations early morning or after dark etc you don't want to be a female tourist alone.

It also depends on where you go I was only in Bucharest.

Its better than Prague though.

I plan to check homeland security travels warnings. Lately there has been a rise in attacks on women traveling alone. First hand experience helps a lot.

Thanks. 🙂

To be honest as a female i wouldn't travel anywhere alone if i had the option not to. But that's just me.

I have group trips coming up, but there's a few places that I'd like to visit that people aren't on board with, so I'll go alone.

Yes. I travelled alone to Romania but I did stay with friends in an Airbnb. I met up with @Damnata and @Justagirl

However, I travel alone a lot (just got back from Prague a few months ago) and even if I didnt have friends to meet in Romania...after being there, I would feel 100% comfortable on my own.

A lot depends on where you are going and what you plan to do.

If you plan on going horseback riding and painting etc its different from if you want to go play in casinos and go clubbing.

The former is my preference. I like to venture off to non tourist places, but since I'd be alone, I'll keep my joie de vivre to a minimum.

I'm sold?

Are you from Romania or have you visited?

What dishes would you recommend I try?

Yes, I'm from Romania.

Hmmm... I'd say you have to try sarmale cu mamaliga (stuffed cabbage with polenta) and mititei cu cartofi piure (Romanian sausage with mashed potatoes)

Oh cool. I'm assuming you no longer live there. How often do you go back to visit?

They both sound delicious. I love anything with potatoes, especially mashed. Thanks.

Yes, @Damnata would be the go-to girl if you want to get around Romania.

I went there in 2015 via Dortmund, and haven't regretted it.

No I don't live there anymore. It's been years since I last went to visit. We had my aunt and cousins come here (to the US) to visit us more often.

You're welcome 🙂

Thanks so much. This information helps me to determine if I will go alone. I have 2 trips before I start planning for Romania. I will reach out when it's time to start planning.

Ok. I may have questions in the future.

P.S. I just googled mititei cu cartofi piure. Looks so good!

I traveled from Vegas to Romania alone. Had a 5 hour lay over in London, granted I didn't leave Heathrow lol. @damnata met me at the airport in Bucharest, if i had to get from the airport to the airbnb, not sure I would have felt safe, being in a new country and all. The overall experience of it was amazing, meet a ton of nice people, meet some not so nice people-they prolly thought who tf are these crazy american women. Was my first trip out of the US.

I'm a midget (5') and would get pushed to the side a lot, or people would literally step in front of me to cut in line but Elle and Nata are tall and i'd just move behind them.. so i felt safe 😛 I haven't traveled out of the states since but I am planning a trip to Scotland soon, hope to have a travel buddy but am okay if i don't.

Amazing? Sounds like a pretty good time, if you gave the "crazy American" impression. lol I'm becoming more and more interested.....

I'm sure it would be more fun with company though. I'd be less reluctant to explore.

Like you I like my travel buddies as buffers, but for different reasons.

Awww a cute lil 5 footer. I'm "average height", 5'5.5". Don't know if you consider that tall or not. lol

How long was the total of both flights? What time of season was your visit?

Did you stay in contact with any new people you meant? How were the other people not so nice?

Scotland sounds nice. When are you going?

I do have one tip....

Don't happy dance down marble stairs with socks on....especially if nobody else is around.

You most definitely will fall.

I could be speaking from experience, not sure. (thank gawd they didn't see me)

lmbo Now I know you girls had fun. So sad there's no video footage of this.

Sounds like something I'd do. Note to self: Remove socks, before "cutting a rug" on marble stairs.

P.S. Glad you're still alive and kicking. 🙂

Don’t tell anyone you meet that you are traveling alone. My two cents 😉

This ^^^

I'm a friendly person and will talk to anyone....when I was in Prague, I was often asked if I was alone (which I thought was a little weird but maybe it's culture) and I always said I was waiting for my friends.

People also asked where I was staying and I always give vague answers and never brought anyone even remotely close to my apartment.

If you travelled alone before, you probably know these things but they are important to note.

I also would take different routes (because I would also find a place I liked and go everyday #fixedsignproblems) so people couldn't pick up a pattern.

I am very standoffish at first, but if I don't feel threatened I get super friendly and very personable. It's natural for me to warm up to women much faster, but I am aware that men send women to lure other women and children, so I'm now more careful. I've experienced it a few times.

I will be "waiting for a friend" every time someone asks me. lol I'll even act irritated and mumble to myself, "I wish she/he hurries up" , like I'm waiting for someone, before I'm even approached. 😉 lmbo

Yes #fixedsignproblems indeed. We can become fixated on things or places. Being air is the only thing that saves me.

They are all good tips. Feel free to give as much as you'd like, even if they seem like common sense. Thanks a bunch.

didn't see this at first because you didn't quote or tag me 😛

Flight from here to Heathrow was 12 hours, then a 5 hour layover. Flight to Bucharest was 3 or 4 ( I think) I was up a total of 24+ hours. I took a red eye thinking I would sleep overnight.. but nope. Also I was going forwards in time so I lost a half day to day in travel but gained it back coming home. Right now it's 11:42 am and in Romania its 9:42 pm .

I went in November. I was with Elle and Nata, meet a few of Damnatas friends, her sag moon buddy is awesome! She played tour guide and took us to a bunch of places. I think it was more of a cultural difference than anyone not being nice. I'm very picky eater and I think they were not used to someone asking for stuff to be removed. I got some funny looks over it. Asking for a regular coffee would get you an espresso, that still cracks me up.

No clue yet on when.

Didn't realize I didn't quote you.

Haha! You found yourself a Sag moon kinship. Yeah the different culture thing makes sense. I'm picky about food too, mainly when eating out.

Last question, until I start planning, is November a great time of season to visit?

Safer than other places - that's for sure...

https://safearound.com/europe/romania/

Tho, even Romanians are humans and Romania is part of this world as well - so you still need some basic level of intelligence paired with common sense to stay safe. Same goes for being wise about the way you spend your money (first things first... "avoid the taxi drivers that approach you at the airport - cause some of them charge 3 x the normal price" ). I mean, compared to other places - the good life in Romania is less expensive (: @Victorious - should be able to confirm this fact). Or even far less - if you're really smart about it (your expenses). There's foreigners who chose Romania for this reason alone (they don't really care about the local sights - they're more interested in having a good time at a price they deem as affordable). Or even to fix their teeth (dental works at same quality - are cheaper here).

Anyway, Romania is still on planet Earth, And even tho, generality speaking - it's not a dangerous place - it still helps to be a bit cautions (or more like - realistic). Especially if you feel like adventuring in the mountains or you travel by car....
