How do you tell a coworker she looks terrible?

I work at Hooters where appearance is everything. We have a host (Leo), which the same rules do not apply to the Hooters girls.. I hate to sound so critical but she looks AWFUL in the uniform (accShe threatened the managers she would quit if she couldn't move up and we were desperate on girls.

She's been set up to be bullied. Tables have called her terrible names, other coworkers have too, and I'm glad it doesn't bother her but I don't know if I should step in. No one will tell her or give her any advice and tips to make the uniform more flattering.

So how do you approach that convo? I feel so low even saying all of this but I'm trying to look out for her.

I'm not going to lie, I'm intrigued by the uniqueness of this question. I've had a couple of friends who've worked at Hooters. A couple of questions though. Is it that she doesn't look good in the uniform (I can extrapolate from there) OR is it that she's not conventionally attractive?

My first piece of advice is to not critique her in public. Leos don't do well with public humiliation. Also if she doesn't seem to be bothered by the name calling, how is it you that you plan to help her? What advice are you looking to give?

She seems confident in her uniform but she has a ton of rolls. Her face is cute. She is wearing a size too small in the shorts but I don't think it'd make a huge difference. She's spilling out of it and I just want her to realize that it's not flattering if she doesn't know that. She'd make more money and customers wouldn't shame her.

Women have enough to worry about regarding self image and self esteem.

And to work in an industry where their assets are judged by men changes how they think about themselves.

They don't need their own gender critiquing them as well.

She knows how she looks. She has a mirror.

There's an image and look customers come for. She doesn't fit it at all. Any other case I wouldn't feel the need to.

I thought she was just a host? Does she get direct tips from the customers? Or do you mean she'd be promoted to server and make more money?

You should just tell her and use your libra tact. Get a size larger for her and ask her to try them on. Sometimes we don't know what we really look like. I've been waiting or my leeb coworker to come back from vacation to tell her that her makeup is gorgeous but she needs to blot her nose or apply some powder throughout the day. Her nose looks like a greased up baking sheet. We are in the beauty industry, and have to set an example.

She was moved up because they were desperate for servers. It happens all the time. Easier to move someone up than go through the entire hiring process. However, it doesn't always mean that person is an ideal candidate.

Hooters is a fucking ridiculous place to work for. They want those uniforms to be a size too small. Why management okayed her uniform is on them in why she looks the way she does. If your place is as shitty as all the others I hear about, your entire work environment is gross and you should defend her when people are talking shit. Maybe pull her aside if she's upset about it, but if she seems fine, I don't know if bringing it up is going to accomplish anything other than upset her.

Just because you'd be embarrassed if that was you doesn't necessarily mean others share in the same vapid views on personal looks. I understand the concern, but I'd only bring it up if she was clearly upset. But as you said, she seems fine, so what the hell ever.

Hell none of the women in hooters ever have ass or boobs anyway. Just pretty faces. Leave that woman alone.

She's an adult, she'll know when it's that time to part ways. Most people really need to have another job lined up anyway before quitting, if she would even do that.
You really don't have to have big boobs/big asses to work in hooters......I don't think that was what she meant by the uniform not being flattering

Does she not fit Into her uniform properly? Is she spilling out of it? I worked at Hooters for a few months back in the day. I didn't like it lol
I like the money but it's kind of stressful most of the time. It doesn't fit her properly at all and I think she was bugging my manager so much about moving up that she just let her because no one has the guts to say anything.

...advice and tips to make the uniform more flattering.

If this is really your aim 😐

1. You have a great rack-- cut the collar out of your shirt, and flaunt it.

2. You have a great ass-- knot your shirt in the front, and...

3. You get the idea.

If it's a hopeless case, then leave her alone about it.

Or better yet, befriend her-- LEOs usually love Leebs,

except when you get wishy washy.

Got it, so basically you want to give her constructive criticism without shaming her. One of the best ways to "critique" a Leo is to be direct.

To do this, take her to the side and let her know that you've noticed that customers are making comments and possibly withholding tips (avoid mentioning other staff's comments as this will only embarrass her). Let her know that based on experience wearing a more size appropriate uniform will emphasize her more positive attributes. This in turrn help her make more money. This will sounds less like a critique of her appearance and more like a useful tip to earn more cash.

However if you are dealing with a super egotistical Leo, she may not be open to direct advice. The next best way is to give the same advice, but to make the Leo feel like your advice is HER idea.

To do this, take her to the side and ask her how's she doing (customers, tips, etc). Let her talk. Tell her you've noticed her drive to climb the corporate ladder. Then ask her if she's ever noticed how altering the uniform get you more tips. Make up a story and tell her how you (or another staff memeber) started making WAY more money when you dialed it back and covered up a bit. Tell her it was so weird, but you (or the other staff member) realized when the uniform fits better and covers more, other "assets" are accentuated while leaving the rest to the customer's imagination. Moral of the story being that when the customers are "less visually stimulated" it is easier to build rapport with them. By conversing with the customers tips increase more than when a lot of skin was shown.

This second method is entirely manipulative, but still gets the same point across.

Honestly, if I were in her position id love and really appreciate you if you told me straight up that some of the girls and the way hooters is set up makes her look bad. I might hate you at the moment for being rude but at the end of the day you'd be the only one who was real to me and let me know straight up what I needed to improve on.

When you do talk to her, maybe mention that if she changed her looks, she might be able to move up because that's the only thing that everyone has on her.

Again - how did she even get hired in the first place if looks are everything and she looks terrible?

And if the answer is anything along the lines of "she just came back from maternity leave", so help me God...
As a host she doesn't really have to fit the image. The image is "athletic" and it's not close. But she got moved up. Like I'm super understanding and normally it's not something that I'd even think about... but yes it makes me uncomfortable having to hear people call her a "fat B".... and not tipping her. I want her to be successful since she wanted to move up so bad

I'd guess that they hired her quickly cause they were short on girls and gave her an existing ill fitting uniform, their problem not hers!

If I'm the op I'd suggest to the manager that she might like a new, better fitting uniform. Or if the op is the manager then hook it up!

So how do you approach that convo? I feel so low even saying all of this but I'm trying to look out for her.

Why don't you accept beauty comes in all types of difference.

And if anyone bullies her tell everyone that person has herpes or break their jaws.

Well ok maybe two wrongs don't make a right....try to resolve disputes peacefully.

The problem is not the girl...it's Hooters. Burn the place to the ground unless it shapes up!

I've been to Hooters only twice. And that was because I lived up the street and they were the only ones close by staying open late when my work was over.

When I've gone in there, I was business like in wanting to get food and leave. I guess that made an impression.

Because I was friendly but to the point and tipped well, the waitresses liked me. I guess they have so many thirsty dudes trying to get with them during the day, its a relief when someone isnt creeping for a change.

I dont mess with people in the service industry unless they are genuinely interested and make a move showing that.

But I would leave her alone, she is a grown adult. She needs to learn the ropes by herself some time.

Meh- I wouldn't say anything

It's not your place, and from the sounds of things-

Outside of her loosing weight, she would need to size up in her uniform- Which would require management to interfere.

Say something- the wrong thing- She could emo out, and get you fired for harrassment.

My only concern is why you care so much about how much money this chick makes- From your OP, that seems to be your reasoning behind why you want to say something...

How does it in anyway affect you? Are you planning on living with this girl? Does she owe you money?

If the above is, no- why care. It's not your issue.

Sounds like stirring the pot, just to start drama.
